This story illustrates our passion for the mediation process.

When people point to an example of self-reliance, they often mention the mature deep-rooted oak tree that stands alone. However in a hurricane, the oak tree is vulnerable because of its lack of flexibility. The pine tree can bend in a hurricane but the sequoia or redwood demonstrates a higher degree of flexibility.

How does the redwood, the oldest and tallest tree in North America, withstand the greatest winds while having a very shallow root system? The answer is that redwood trees live in groves, their roots are intermingled, and they support and hold each other up during fierce storms.

Summarizing how a dispute in a management team or a marriage can actually bring people together at a deeper level, one couple, upon resolving a long-standing issue, claimed as their greatest insight: "I have to do it myself but I don't have to do it alone." The couple discovered they were "even more effective as parents."
